The most common reason for missed school and work is the common cold. Most colds, coughs, and sore throats are caused by viruses and will resolve on their own. They generally do not require a visit to a health care provider or antibiotics. For more information see The Common Cold.

Many common ailments can be treated with over the counter (OTC) medications and do not require a visit with a medical provider. The pharmacy has a variety of OTC medications to treat:

The following symptoms may indicate a need to see a medical provider (call (707) 664-2921 for an appointment at the SHC):

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever over 101o F
  • Severe sore throat and/or difficulty swallowing
  • History of asthma or heart problems
  • Symptoms not improving after 5 days
